BARWON DISTRICT SOCIAL GOLF CLUB GEELONG |
ABOUT US
The Barwon District Social Golf Club started life in 1964 as the Barwon District Police Golf Club and sometime around 1972 the name became Barwon District Police and Patrons Golf Club. Due to problems arising from the use of the police logo and sponsorship being supplied by regulated bodies, it was deemed necessary to change the name in 2012 to avoid any conflicts of interest about the use of the word ‘Police’ in the title.
The first meeting consisting of 12 members of J District of the Barwon District Police to discuss the setting up of a Police Golf Club was held at the Geelong Police Station on the 6th of August 1964, Inspector Hamilton presiding. In the first year there was a membership of fifty two (thirty four Police Officers and eighteen patrons. The first match was held at the Queens Park Golf Course on September 14 1964, at a cost of 2 shillings a head. Light refreshments were served on conclusion of the game. Membership subscription was initially set at ten shillings but increased to £2 in 1965. The 19th hole was located at the rear of the Great Western Hotel, where the cost of light refreshments and sandwiches, was reduced to 2 shillings. In the early days the sandwiches were prepared by Ray Taylor and his wife with expert assistance from Jim Lee and Noel French. This task was later outsourced. In 1984 the Annual Subscription was adjusted to $5. From the beginning the club was very popular with all ranks within the Police Force, and patrons were drawn from many business fields.
Monday was an ideal day for all members, and also for the participating golf clubs, where patronage after the weekend was low. Since the name change in recent years, the Club’s popularity has continued to grow and now the Barwon District Social Golf Club caters to all newcomers. As at 2020 Membership fees are $20 annually and irrespective of golf course, green fees are $20 a round. This includes additional benefits particularly at the more remote country clubs where complimentary barbecues are provided for your enjoyment and entry into the members' draw. There are other benefits, but you will have to become a member to find out about them. Games are played on Mondays at various venues throughout the Geelong region on a fortnightly basis (full fixture within), with tee stewards available between 9am and 9.30am and tee times from 9am to 10am. New members and guests are assured of a friendly welcome.
Over the years there have been many people who have distinguished themselves in many ways, either acting on the committees, as tee stewards, barbecue chefs, etc. Some names that come to mind Joe Cousins, Arthur Stephenson, Alan Morgan, Keith Drayton whose name you will find on trophies donated by them.
Others who have served in many ways include, who could forget the “moth” Hughie Nailon, Ray Taylor, Noel French, David Hand, Ron Mann, Ron Gillam , Jim Lee, Keith Johns, Roy Nardi, Barney Barritt, Peter Bliss, Jim Reeves, Angus Robertson, Ross Forbes, Bob Molyneux, Bernie Dalton, Terry Littlewood, Syd Hamlyn, David Hand, Ian Graham, David Lewis and a host of others who should be remembered for their contributions.
The golf club is a non-profit organization and it has been the practice over the years to donate any surplus funds to local charitable bodies. Recipients have included Barwon Health through a bed and several wheel chairs, and the McKellar hydrotherapy centre. Donations have also been made to Heartbeat Geelong and Motor Neurone Disease.
The club has a steady membership base and has several honorary life members who have all given outstanding service for the betterment of members: Harold Crowe *, Kevin Cole*, Keith Drayton*, George Taylor, Frank Harrison, Robert Hadden, Gordon Myers and Larry Myles.
